Unconscious attention plays the role of a guard dog without rest.

Updated: May 29, 2022

By studying "Study of Consciousness", I would like to think about my method and the coaching theory, such as unconscious rewriting.

This series of blog posts is my study note.

Various stimuli such as sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell, and language come into our brain from modal channels.

This time, I will sort out the relationship between the ability to direct "attention" to these and the consciousness/unconsciousness.

Several recent experiments have shown that "attention" works unconsciously.

William James says that the role of "attention" is to "choose one of several possible objects of thought."

If you need to be "conscious" when making this choice, then if you have to consider and select any stimulus in the frontal lobe theoretically, your brain will have to make a full rotation every day. ..

Our brains are constantly distracted by dozens or hundreds of objects of thought, consciously scrutinizing each one before deciding which of them deserves to be picked up. If so, wouldn't it be inefficient?

As I've written in previous blogs, it has been shown that even if you flash a short-term visual stimulus that is invisible to you, even if such stimulus remains unconscious, it will attract "attention". I am.

Even if the person is entirely unaware of the hidden facts when another stimulus is given to the same position, the attention is sharpened, and the attention is directed quickly and accurately.

Conversely, if the content of the invisible image has nothing to do with the main task that the brain is thinking about, the brain can delay the process. The process will delay later if you stay unconscious rather than conscious.

As everyone feels, loud noises, flashing lights, and other unexpected sensory stimuli draw our attention.

No matter how much you try to ignore it, it will invade the realm of our hearts.

That's because the danger watch-and-warning mechanism is working.

It's hazardous to keep out all the other stimuli when focused on video games.

Unexpected stimuli such as screams and your name must interrupt the video game.

At such times, a filter called "selective attention" needs to work continuously out of consciousness. Therefore, we can say that unconscious attention plays the role of a guard dog without rest.

When "attention" is directed to a stimulus, it dramatically amplifies brain waves.

Conscious stimuli and unconscious stimuli amplify brain waves when "attention" is directed.

On the contrary, by not being "attention", it is so weak that the person does not notice it, and it is possible to attenuate the visual stimulus. By consciously "attention", it influences the direction of unconscious attention.

Isn't it the coaching affirmation that made good use of this effect?

Affirmation means to orient the value that the unconscious evaluates by repeatedly recollecting important images through "consciousness".

Read every day what you want to be on paper

Visualize how you are achieving your goals, etc.

You were shown a series of shapes and told to ignore the circles and find only the squares.

The squares are on the right, and the circles are on the left.

However, these shapes are masked and are not visible to you.

You don't know which one has the square, and you press the key randomly.

However, brain image analysis shows that attention is directed to the right side.

Visual attention is drawn to the right goal, even when it is not completely visible.
