Subliminal image: Specific method of "mask".

Updated: May 29, 2022

(Cognitive science) In coaching, rewriting the unconscious is a powerful means of achieving the goal.

By studying "Study of Consciousness", I would like to think about my method and the coaching theory, such as unconscious rewriting.

This series of blog posts is my study note.

The picture below shows how to "mask" the word image "radio".

Suppose you flash the word "radio" for 33 milliseconds, which is about one frame of a movie.

Making the word "radio" invisible is an optical illusion called "masking."

The masking effect appears by displaying the figure at the same position before and after the display of "radio".

With suitable timing adjustments, the observer can only see the flickering patterns.

Words sandwiched between the front and back shapes are entirely invisible.

The word "radio" flashed in a series of random shapes displayed

The subject cannot see it.

It looks as if nothing is displayed between the two masks.

With a photoelectric cell [a converter for detecting and measuring light and other radiation],

It's clear that the word is displayed,

We can confirm that the fact that it disappears is a subjective phenomenon.

Also, if you display it long enough, the word will be visible.

Below the threshold (below the fighting value) ・ ・ ・ Invisible in the display for 40 milliseconds

Above the threshold (above the fighting value). Seems to reach 60 milliseconds

Although the threshold varies slightly from person to person, it is always around 50 milliseconds.

Near the threshold, it's about half the probability of being visible or invisible.

There are several masking techniques that you can use to adjust your consciousness at will.

The subject cannot consciously recognize images of a laughing face or an angry face.

Even if it expresses intense emotion, a rushed face is unconsciously kept by sandwiching it with a random image.

In this example, only the mask and the last face are visible.

You can also investigate your perception of personal emotions.

Another variation of masking is to flash a series of shapes and surround one with four dots that will display for a long time.

Only the figure surrounded by four dots is unconscious, and the other figures are visible.

Since the four points are displayed longer than the figure, they and the space surrounded by them are

It seems that the figure at that position is replaced and erased.・ ・ This method is called "replacement masking".

Masking provides complete control of experimental parameters and provides visual information with high temporal accuracy, making it a tremendous experimental tool for studying the course of unconscious visual stimuli.

We have found that the best condition is to flash one target image and then display one mask.

It "injects" a finely controlled amount of visual information (such as words) into the subject's brain at the right time.

By removing the subsequent mask, the subject will always see the target image.

Conversely, the mask will suppress the initial target image if masked.

So there must be a strange competition in your brain.

It can be seen that the words came into the brain earlier, but the subsequent masks caught up with them and locked the former out of conscious perception.
