Does the "binocular struggle" raise awareness of information regardless of one's will?

Updated: May 29, 2022

(Cognitive science) In coaching, rewriting the unconscious is a powerful means of achieving the goal.

By studying "Study of Consciousness", I would like to think about my method and the coaching theory, such as unconscious rewriting.

This series of blog posts is my study note.

The question has arisen whether the information in the subconscious is passively raised in consciousness, regardless of our will.

If we are passively conscious, we are being manipulated unconsciously. I can't think of that.

I tried to determine how this area has become apparent in the binocular struggle experiment.

When perceiving the two competing images, the left and right images alternate, so it seems that we passively recognize either, regardless of will.

However, as a result of the experiment,

We know that we pay attention to strongly recognising the person's image.

The unconscious seems to recognise that one should pay attention to the image. I was a little relieved. 😅

Pan Chan and colleagues at the University of Minnesota have found that to clarify this, they need to find brain signs that indicate whether the two images are competing.

They already knew that neurons would fire alternately in response to one of the images during the binocular struggle, so they would label each image by blinking at a specific rhythm, "Frequency. I used a technique called the "labelling method".

It turns out that if one vibration is strong, the other is weak during the binocular struggle. (The figure on the left is an image)

We have revealed that we can only see one image at a time.

But when the subject is not paying attention, these conflicts stop, and the two signs occur separately.

If you are not careful, you will lose the struggle between your eyes.

It turns out that the binocular struggle is chosen by our will, whether we pay attention or not.

Without conscious attention, the two images will not compete.

A lot of information reaches the brain not only from the eyes but also from other modal channels.

So it turned out that my attention (will) is picking up to be conscious and raise it to consciousness.
